How to Fix MBR in Windows XP and Vista. What is the MBR? MBR stands for Master Boot Record and it’s the first sector of your hard drive that basically tells the BIOS where to look for the operating system on your computer. If, for any reason, the MBR becomes damaged or corrupt, then the operating system will be unable to load. You will normally see error messages like: Error loading operating system. Missing operating system. Invalid partition table. These messages are definitely not fun, especially if you are not familiar with computers. However, that’s not true. Being in IT myself, these errors are actually preferably to other types of Windows errors. Why? Well, it’s actually fairly easy to fix the Master Boot Record in XP and Vista. All you have to do is load up the Recovery Console and run a simple command. All of your data, applications, settings, etc are still intact on the drive and once the MBR is fixed, the computer will load normally. So how can you repair your damaged MBR? Here are the steps to follow: 1. First, restart your computer with the Windows XP setup disk in the CD drive. If you don’t have your original disk, borrow one or download a ISO image from a torrent site. When prompted, boot from the CD drive by pressing any key. If Windows loads automatically, you will first have to enter the BIOS setup and change the order of the boot devices to start with the CD drive. Once the setup loads, you will see the option to press R to repair a Windows installation. Once the Recovery Console loads up, you will have to type in a number that corresponds to your Windows installation. This is normally just 1. Press Enter and then type in the Administrator password. Now at the prompt, type in fixmbr. Your damaged MBR will now be replaced with a new master boot record and your computer should now be able to boot properly. Note that you may also want to run the fixboot command to repair the boot sector with a new one. Also, make sure you only use these commands on a system with one operating system installed. If you have more than one operating system installed, fixmbr and fixboot could mess up everything. Fix MBR in Vista. In Vista, the procedure to fix the master boot record is a bit different. You have to start up Vista in the Recovery Environment and then run the bootrec command. Here’s how. 1. First, load up the Windows Vista disc in your drive and press any key to boot from the disc. Choose the language, time, currency, etc and click Next. ![]() Now click on Repair Your Computer. Choose the operating system to repair and click Next. Looking for a way to delete desktop wallpapers from your Windows PC? If you have ever changed the wallpaper in Windows, you’ve probably noticed the ridiculous number of useless wallpapers that come with the system by default. I have NEVER used any of the built- in wallpapers and therefore wanted to figure out a way to delete them permanently! This is probably a useless endeavor for most people, but if you are into customizing your machine to the max, then this might be worth your time. If you right- click on the desktop, choose Personalize, and click on Desktop Background at the bottom you’ll see all the default wallpapers that are included in the system listed there. In Windows 7, you have categories like Architecture, Characters, etc. In Windows 8, you have more annoying categories like Flowers and Lines and colors. Again, I really would rather all of these wallpapers not show up. Windows 1. 0 has another set of newly created wallpapers that will be shipping when it’s released this summer. Luckily, deleting the wallpapers is as easy as navigating to the correct folder and deleting everything there. In Windows XP, there are a few locations where these annoying wallpapers are stored. In Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 1. The main place to look in every version of Windows is: C: \Windows\Web\Wallpaper. In that folder you will see the default wallpapers installed on the system. In Windows XP, you’ll see some JPG and BMP images, the most famous being Bliss. In Windows 7 and higher, you might find a couple of folders and those are the categories that I was mentioning above. Now you can simply delete all the images in this folder and they will be removed from the desktop background dialog the next time you open it. If you think you may actually want to use the wallpapers later, you can just cut them and paste them into a temp folder. Copy them back later on to have them show up in the list again. One problem that you might run into when trying to delete wallpapers in Windows 7, 8 or 1. Trusted. Installer. This is a major annoyance in later versions of Windows and it’s meant to prevent non- technical people from messing up the system by deleting important system files. In order to delete the files or folders, you will have to change the owner to yourself first and then give yourself Full Control permissions. Once you do that, you can copy over any image files you want in JPG format and they should show up in the desktop background dialog. As you can see, I also created a folder inside the Wallpaper folder called My Wallpapers. Instead of the default wallpapers included with Windows, you can add a bunch of your own favorites. You can obviously add pictures from anywhere by simply clicking the Browse button and navigating to that folder, but the point here is to customize the look of the dialog so that it shows your custom wallpapers instead of the default ones. As a side note, Windows XP also has a bunch of wallpapers stored in the C: \Windows directory. Make sure to be careful here because there are also many important files stored in the Windows directory and you don’t want to accidentally delete them. Note that you only want to delete the . BMP files, so leave everything else alone. I would suggest viewing the directory in Thumbnails mode and then slowly browsing and deleting the wallpapers as you see them. So that’s how you can remove background wallpapers from Windows if you like. It’s not something most people would care to do, but if you’re someone like me who likes to tinker, then it’s fun little experiment. Turn Off or Disable User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista. User Account Control (UAC) is a new security feature in Windows Vista that requires all users to log on and run in standard user privileges mode instead of as administrator with full administrative rights, thus prevent unauthorized or accidental changes that could destabilize the computers or allows virus and malware to exploit the system- level privileges provided to the local administrator to attack the network security, compromise computer safety and privacy, and damage files and settings in the network. However, in a lot of cases, administrator rights are needed by end- users to perform certain tasks such as install or update programs and perform typical system- level task. Beside, many software applications also need administrator privileges to run properly without conflicts, as they are designed to write to system locations during normal operation, and computer in locked- down state in which users operate in standard user mode severely limits user productivity. In Windows Vista, as and when standard end- user requires administrator privileges to perform certain tasks such as attempting to install an application or write to registry, Windows Vista will prompt a UAC credential prompt to notify the user that a credential of administrator user account is needed for authorization or permission, thus reduce the chance user can accidentally make modifications to vista system files or settings and eliminate the ability for virus or malware to invoke administrator privileges without a user’s knowledge.
